Frequently Asked Questions

You can contact our Gosford dentist by ringing us on 02 4324 1181, booking an appointment online, sending an email to reception@albanydental.net.au or visiting our practice. We will do our best to book a convenient appointment for your child/children. If your child is in pain, however, please let us know when you get in touch and we’ll do our best to arrange an appointment as soon as possible.

As a rule of thumb, the best time to take your baby to the dentist is once their first tooth becomes visible or they reach 12 months old – whichever comes first.

However, if you notice something that you think is out of the ordinary, it’s better to be safe than sorry and book an appointment straight away. We also recommend bringing the child in with you to family dental check-up appointments – that way they can get used to the sights, sounds and smells at an early age. We can even give them a ride in the chair!

To ensure good dental hygiene as they grow, it’s important that your children begin to take care of their teeth from a very young age. A helpful tip, if you are looking to motivate your kids to brush their teeth, is to make it fun and let them pick their own toothbrushes.

It’s also important to make sure that you, as their parent, are setting a good example. Brush your teeth at the same time as them or even turn it into a group activity for the whole family – this way, they start to understand it’s an essential task rather than a choice.

Being afraid of the dentist is common among adults, whether that fear stems from a previous bad experience or childhood trauma. However, no matter your own feelings about the dentist, keep things light around your children – never talk about your fears with them and don’t use dental visits as a threat to encourage better brushing.

Also, never tell your child that the dentist “won’t hurt” as this suggests it’s something they should fear. All our staff are warm and welcoming, and we’ll do our very best to ensure your child doesn’t leave our practice feeling scared or anxious.

There are many things we recommend that you do at home to take care of your child’s teeth. This includes brushing twice daily and replacing their toothbrushes every 3-4 months.

Your child can also start to floss their teeth from the age of 4, although you may prefer to do this for them until they’re a bit older. Make sure you book check-ups every 6 months as well so we can keep on top of any problems, like cavities, before they get worse.
